Head of the Nigerien National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland General Abdourahamane Tiani launched on Saturday a historic conference on political transition, which will determine the future political structure of the country.More than 700 delegates, representing all social and professional groups in Niger as well as the diaspora, are reportedly set to discuss the country's future structure until February 19. They will present their decisions to Tiani within three weeks after the conference concludes.

A national conference on political transition in Niger's capital, Niamey, aims to draft a transitional charter serving as an interim constitution and to decide the duration of the transition period for restoring civilian rule after military governance.
Head of the Nigerien National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland General Abdourahamane Tiani launched on Saturday a historic conference on
political transition, which will determine the future political structure of the country.
"These discussions mark a historic step for Niger. Every Nigerien, wherever they may be, must contribute, for they concern our survival as a nation and our common interests. I instruct the government to continue its efforts to further involve our compatriots by implementing innovative mechanisms to ensure an inclusive and participatory national dialogue," the general said at the opening ceremony of the conference, which he promised to convene in August 2023.
More than 700 delegates, representing all social and professional groups in Niger as well as the diaspora, are reportedly
set to discuss the country's future structure until February 19. They will present their decisions to Tiani within three weeks after the conference concludes.
"They [discussions] must be a framework for constructive work, aimed at uniting Nigeriens around the ideals of unity, social cohesion, justice, security, and economic and social progress. I assure everyone that the proposals emerging from these discussions will be taken into account and translated into concrete actions upon receipt of the final report," Tiani emphasized.
